Coaching 101

The main purpose of coaching is for personal as well as professional development. Coaching is defined both as an art and as a practice. It is a two-way process that inculcates inspiring clients, energizing them, enhancing their performance, and facilitating learning and self-development.

When the definition of coaching is broken down, you can see the main components that make coaching a success and a much needed activity in one’s life. It is referred to as an art because it involves the interplay of two entities, the coach and the player. It is considered a practice because it involves using knowledge, skills, and attitude to create an interaction with the player and deliver results that make a positive impact.

This is considered a two-way process because there is an interaction between two key individuals, the coach and the player. As the player learns from the coach of how to become a better person, the coach also learns how to maximize his potential and capability of coaching enough to reach out to the player and facilitate change.

Coaching entails inspiration. It inspires the player to break out of the usual paradigm and explore his or her potentials and creativity. The player, through the aid of the coach, is more capable of coming up with new thoughts and is constantly motivated by one’s inspiration.

Energizing the player is another component of coaching. It motivates the player through effective communication, provision of options, and building an optimistic attitude that keeps the player activated to work and to live.

Coaching does not necessarily mean teaching new things or enforcing new lessons to be learned. It simply facilitates your already existing capability to learn. In coaching, the coach already recognizes that every player has the capacity to gain insight and think creatively for themselves.

The intention of every coach is to improve the performance of the player. When performance is improved, the coach is likewise helping the player to be more efficient and effective in whatever domain the player is in or wishes to be in.

The coach also wishes to for the player to have a broadened perspective on life. The coach, through the process of coaching, aids the player to broaden his or her horizons. The basic foundation for success is learning. The coach has to inculcate this into the player. When the player has a greater ability to learn, there is no end to what they can do. Perhaps the player can master a skill or can use critical thinking in solving problems.

All of these processes are for the development of the player in terms of personal growth and self-awareness. When players gain insight about their selves and their capabilities, they are able to grow and experience self-improvement. Their self-esteem is boosted and their confidence strengthened. This is the picture of a self-made man.

Coaching is ultimately undertaken by anyone because it works under the vision of achieving the goal of which is empowering the player, urging excellence, and facilitating a connection between themselves and their inner authority.
